STRETCH IN WIRE ROPES

Stretch is apparent in all wire ropes, initially as permanent stretch when the load is first applied and the individual wires bed down, and then as conventional elastic stretch within the wires. Where stretch is critical to the application, initial stretch can be accounted for with cables pretensioned or pre-stressed during swaging and cable manufacturing. Elastic stretch can be calculated by the following formula.

(W × L )/ (E × A)

Where:

W= Applied Load (kN)

L = Cable Length (mm)

E = Strand Modulas (kN/mm² )

A = Area of Cable = (D2 × ) / 4

SWAGING TO THE MILSPEC* STANDARD IMPERIAL WIRE AND TERMINALS

The swage portion of all Ronstan rigging products is manufactured to meet, or exceed, the United States of America *Military Specification, 'Milspec'.
Correct installation of a swage fitting requires that the shank of the fitting be formed down onto the wire with specialised dies and presses in accordance with the 'Milspec' dimensions.

LOAD RATINGS & SAFETY FACTOR

Breaking Loads (B.L.) are the typical loads at, or around, which failure can be expected to occur with new product. A factor of safety should be applied to the Breaking Load figures to suit each application. The factor of safety should allow for safety implications, service life, fatigue (including cyclic nature of loading and stresses), type of load and corrosion etc. Optional proof load testing of batch sampling can be ordered.
