Snipe Tuning Information
Update
The Seldén ‘Miracle’ 2420 section Snipe mast is the result of many years’ work involving leading Snipe sailors and builders from 4 continents around the world.
The mast is based on our low windage ‘2420’ section, with internal sleaving arranged to give optimum bend characteristics. The double side taper gives a topmast, which is stiff sideways with good fore/aft gust response.
With a custom extrusion for the internal sleaving, the localised stiffeners are the most efficient way to gain the improved mast stiffness. The 2420 section has won numerous World, European and National titles.
Results
2001 Championship Successes:
- U.S. Midwinters - 1st
- World Championships - 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th.
2003 Championship Successes
- World Championships :- 2,3,4,9,10 (2420 section) 7,8 (Vectis section)
Why Seldén?
Choose a Seldén mast and you will find many performance enhancing features unique to our products, for example:
- The Seldén tapering system ensures that our tapers are minimum size and weight. This gives low windage, centre of gravity and topmast weight. This maximises your speed by enabling the topmast to react quickly to gusts and waves giving better acceleration, a smoother ride upwind and, ultimately, more races won!
- Automated welding keeps excess heat out of the taper for guaranteed consistency and performance. The weld produced is so perfect that there is no need to mechanically grind the weld (which can induce inconsistencies). This means that once we have finalised a winning design, you can be sure that your spar will perform identically to the champions.
- All masts are heat treated in our purpose-designed oven. This artificial hardening ensures that you get maximum performance from the high performance aluminium alloy.
- Our spars pass through a purpose-developed bead-peening machine. This gives the mast a perfect satin finish that dramatically improves fatigue properties, giving you a mast that will perform reliably for many years.
- Top quality fittings such as our fully adjustable spreader bracket and highly durable cast gooseneck ensure speed and reliability on the racecourse.
Mast Specification - 2420
Our standard specification is based on development with Jan Persson, and includes specially positioned internal sleeves to achieve optimum mast stiffness and strength.
2420 mast includes internal halyard lock to reduce compression in mast. Vectis mast has a hook rack for main halyard and an extended vang plate for additional low down stiffness.
Included with both standard masts are: - heel plug, vang plate/ stiffener, limited swing spreaders with adjustable angle and length, and ball bearing jib sheave with wear guard.
Mast is supplied with drawlines for halyards to facilitate rapid attachment of rigging.
Boom Specification - 2628 , 2229
Seldén 2628 boom section is ideal for the Snipe, being light and stiff. Boom includes special slides, which enable mainsheet blocks to be attached with no need for cumbersome shackles. Boom is complete with inboard and outboard ends with sheaves plus three boom slides, or complete including outhaul with lever for fast adjustment to previous settings, plus internal Shockcord system for jib stick.
For ultimate vertical stiffness, 2229 boom section is available as an alternative.
Spinnaker Pole Specification
Rigging Specification
Includes wire main halyard with stop for 2420 mast, wire main halyard for Vectis, plus 7 * 19 jib halyard and dyform shrouds for 2420 mast and 1* 19 shrouds for greater gust response on Vectis masts. The main halyard on the Vectis mast has an extended loop which gives minimum centre of gravity according to Snipe class rules, but lower c of g when the mainsail is hoisted, for faster sailing in choppy conditions.
